Fish in the Netherlands / オランダの魚について
It took me a while to get this started but I wanted to share my experience in getting fish in the Netherlands.
Fish is an important part of the East Asian diet. When I was young, we would have fish almost every other day. Unfortunately, like most Asian mothers of my generation, my mother did not teach me how to cook. It wasn't until I moved out and started living by myself in Japan that I started paying a bit more attention to what I eat.
In Japan, fish was very easy to obtain from the supermarket. They are clearly labelled to tell you which ones are safe to eat raw, something I missed when I came to NL. Fish is not as popular here and the choices at regular supermarkets are limited to mostly salmon and cod. Fortunately, at the Tuesday/ Saturnday market along the Binnenrotte, there are quite a variety to choose from. The only problem was that I didn't know the names of the fish. I did a bit of research and think I identified most of the common ones at the market. So I'm sharing the results here in this blog but I could be wrong. Feel free to leave a message if you see something that doesn't seem right.

Makreel = mackerel = さば = 鯖魚
This is one of the most common fish in Japanese cuisine. I buy it often and cook it with miso.
これさばですね。さばの味噌煮を作りました。さばき方についてはYouTubeからいろいろ勉強になりました。
Horsmakreel = Horse mackerel = あじ = 竹筴魚
小さいごろよく食べてたアジのみりん干しが恋しいです。今度作りましょうか?
Octopus = octopus = たこ = 章魚
I was very happy to find octopus because I got some to make takoyaki.
たこも普通に売られてます。タコパに便利ですね😆
Dorade = sea bream = ヨーロッパヘダイ = 金頭鯛
I'm not familiar with this fish but the meat was thick and not bony. It was delicious steamed and flavoured with ginger and soy sauce.
Krab = crab = カニ = 螃蟹
Not sure if this was the same as the crab I bought the other time. I think these are called brown crabs, not a variety we commonly find in Asia. At the market, the crabs were sold live.

Roodbaars/zeebaars = red seabream/sea bass = タイ/ヨーロッパスズキ = 鱲魚/鱸魚
[Updated 22/12/2020] I bought a seabass at the market in Afrikaanderplein to try. The stall helps you gut the fish but I had to fillet it myself. I steamed the fish with ginger, spring onions, soy sauce and chilli and a little bit of cooking rice wine to help remove the fishy smell. This fish had a rather neutral taste and the meat was tender.
ロッテルダム南部にあるもう一つの市場に行ってきました。ここは魚がセンターにある市場より若干安いと思います。今回はヨーロッパスズキを買ってみました。内臓処理はお店に頼みましたが、さばきは自分でチャレンジしてみました。肉が分厚く、骨も少ないので、とても食べやすい魚でした。醤油蒸しによく合いました。頭、骨、しっぽを捨てずに、出汁を取りました。
Geep = garfish = ガーフィッシュ = 頜針魚
Schelvis = haddock = コダラ = 黑線鱈
Pieterman = weever = ワニギス(?)= 龍鰧(?)
I don't know any of these fish. Think they are unique to Europe. However, it seems that garfish is related to sanma (pacific saury) so I'm very curious how it tastes.
ほとんど見たことないヨーロッパの魚類だと思いますが、ガーフィッシュはサンマの親戚らしいです。今度食べてみたいです。サンマ風塩焼き😋
Poon = red gurnard = ホウボウ = 紅體綠鰭魚
Inktvis = squid = いか = 魷魚
Schar = dab = カレイ = 鰈魚
Schol = plaice = カレイ = 鰈魚
二種類のカレイですが、違いは赤い点があるかないか。。。かな?😅
Not a fish I'm familiar with but it seems to be common used to make fried fish and fish fingers.
Whitingという魚いろんな種類があるみたいですが、検索してみたら、日本で白身フライでよく使われてるそうです。
Forel = trout = マス = 鱒魚
Trout is apparently related to salmon.
マスはサケの家族らしいです。
That's it for now. I'm hoping to try more of these fish in the future. If they taste good in a recipe, I'll share it on the blog.
オランダで買える魚を一部判定しました。美味しいかどうかはこれからだんだん判断していきたいと思います。
